As far as our general health and wellness is concerned, doctors, personal trainers, lifestyle coaches, fitness gurus, health officials, and a cacophony of other experts always emphasize the importance of staying physically active. Recently, alarming statistics emerged which revealed that, for the first time ever, the next generation of children born will have shorter average life expectancies than their parents. Furthermore, obesity levels are out of control, chronic diseases such as type-2 diabetes are becoming more common, and our health in general is suffering. This can all be avoided by leading a healthy lifestyle, eating right, and exercising more. Here are 4 reasons to stay physically active.

Manage your weight – First and foremost, not everybody exercises because they want to lose weight, or because they need to. Some people exercise for weight management. If you’re overweight, your joints suffer, you put a strain on your major organs, and you’ll be more likely to suffer from a chronic illness, and to die before your time. Exercise is a great way of burning calories so that you can manage your weight. Whether you want to stay at a healthy weight, or lose a few pounds to get into better shape, physical exertion is a great way to do precisely that.

Improve your mental health – Mental health is another issue which needs addressing directly. Far too many people suffer in silence when dealing with a mental health issue, for fear of being judged, or ridiculed. Mental health disorders such as stress, anxiety, and depression, can make you feel incredibly low, they can drain your motivation, and they can even result in people tragically taking their own lives. Exercise is a wonderful way of beating stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. To begin with it gives you a sense of accomplishment and purpose, as you feel like you’ve achieved something worthwhile after working out. On top of that, exercise also promotes an increase in endorphin productions which are ‘happy chemicals’ produced by the brain to make us feel happy and content.

Great for the bones and muscles – When we’re physically active, it isn’t just our waistlines that benefit. Physical activity is also a great way of increasing lean muscle tissue, and strengthening your bones in the process. As we age, our bones become smaller and weaker. This leaves us susceptible to fractures and it could potentially result in osteoporosis. Exercise gently strengthens and tones the muscles, whilst helping to increase bone density. The end result is stronger muscles and bones, which can only be beneficial in the long-term.

Better sleep patterns – Sleep is one of the most important natural processes in the world. Experts recommend between 7 and 9 hours of quality sleep each night. A lack of sleep leaves us tired, it makes us irritable, it can knock our hormones out of sync, and it can suppress our immune systems. If you want a great way to get to sleep at night, just increase the amount of physical activity you perform each day. Exercise will tire you out, which will obviously make it easier to get to sleep at night. Not only that, but physical exercise also increases the production of melatonin, which is a chemical that is responsible for feelings of tiredness and relaxation. The more we produce, the easier we find it to get to sleep at night and enjoy a peaceful slumber.
